In Longyearbyen’s Backyard, we have about 7-8 moutain tops available without snowmobile transportation, including Trollsteinen, Lars Hierta-fjellet, Nordenskiöldtoppen and Hiorthfjellet. Each of these mountains have different degrees of difficulty, various routes and different lenghts. We believe that the target of the tour is not the destination, but the experience itself. Therefore we encourage our guests to choose the mountain(s) together with our guides in the briefing.
The guide meets you at your hotel in the morning for a short briefing on weather, avalanche conditions and the plan for the day, and off you go for a fantastic trip in our Backyard. The tour may vary in length according to your request and the plan established together with the guide.
On such a tour you do not need much experience with ski touring, but you need to have a normal physical condition as we are using our bodies only to replace the common motorized transports

Equipment and rental
We recommend wearing woolen underlayers close to the skin, covered with one or two layers, and finishing with a shell cover, i.e. gore-tex jacket. In your backpack you should have your down jacket. You can see the packing list on the link below.
Both the ski equipment and the avalanche equipment can be rented. Backyard Svalbard provides avalanche equipment for 500 NOK pr day. Sportscenteret provides ski equipment for 800 NOK pr day.
