How to prepare for an Arctic expedition on Svalbard?

Across the untouched wilderness of Svalbard. How to prepare for the Arctic adventure?
Getting ready for an Arctic adventure in Svalbard requires careful planning, as the region’s extreme climate and remote location offer a unique experience. Below is all the essential information you need to ensure a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable journey. You will find information regarding weather on Svalbard, passport and travel documents information, health and safety and guided tour requirements.
Weather & climate on Svalbard
Svalbard’s Arctic climate is unpredictable. While winter brings polar nights, cold winds, and snow-covered landscapes, summer offers long days of midnight sun, with more moderate temperatures. Be prepared for quick weather changes, including sudden snowfalls or strong winds, regardless of the season.
We recommend packing layers of clothing to adapt to varying conditions. Always bring enough warm, windproof, and waterproof clothing to stay comfortable throughout your tours. Here’s a breakdown of essential items you should pack:
- Base layers (wool or synthetic)
- Mid layers (fleece or insulated jackets)
- Outer layers (windproof and waterproof jacket and pants)
- Down jackets or wool jumpers for warmth
- Warm gloves, mittens, buffs, and hats
- Ski goggles and sunglasses to protect from glare
…And yes, we do have very good outdoor clothing stores up here on Svalbard which is in tax free area. Please be aware that the stores are normally closed on sundays.
Passport & Trave documents
Before you set off for your Arctic adventure, make sure your:
- Passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned return date.
- Travel insurance is booked as it is a must have to cover any unforeseen circumstances such as flight delays, cancellations, or medical emergencies while traveling in such remote areas.
As Svalbard is a Norwegian territory, it follows international travel regulations, so it’s important to ensure that all your documents are in order for a smooth entry and exit.
Health & safety
Svalbard’s wilderness is both stunning and challenging, so it’s important to take health precautions.
Whether you’re going on a ski tour, a glacier hike, or a RIB boat trip, we recommend that you’re in good physical condition. Many of our tours involve walking on uneven ground, climbing glaciers, or skiing in remote areas.
- Physical Fitness:
The Arctic terrain can be demanding. So do training before you arrive so you are fit to do the tour. - First Aid Kit and medications:
We provide first aid kits and safety equipment on all tours. However, if you have specific medical needs or medications, ensure you bring a sufficient supply with you in your hand luggage (not in check-in lugage)
Guided tour equipment requirements
- Ski Equipment:
- Ski tour: If you’re joining a ski tour, ensure you have skis, poles, ski boots, and avalanche gear.
- Ski rentals: We offer ski rentals in house in Longyearbyen, and avalanche gear is available for hire.
- Glacier hikes and snow Gear:
