What you can look forward to...
How do you spot the northern lights on Svalbard? Where are the best to spot the northern lights from in Longyearbyen? Do you dream of experiencing the green curtains in the sky called the northern lights? We will take you on an exclusive and private northern lights hunt so you will have the possibility to experience the magic of the Arctic.
We will pick you up at your hotel and venture into the pristine wilderness of Svalbard in the comfort of a heated vehicle, guided by a local expert dedicated to finding the clearest skies for your Aurora encounter.
The flexibility is possible with a private car and a personalized pace, unlike large bus excursions with large groups and a set schedule. The guide will share stories from the northernmost town in the world.
Please notice:
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon caused by solar activity and atmospheric conditions. This cannot be scheduled or guaranteed to see which is a part of the magic. We will never be able to guarantee that the northern lights will show but our guide will always make sure you go home with new memories and knowledge of this Svalbard and Longyearbyen. The weather can change from hour to hour and while 2026 is a period of high solar activity (near the solar maximum), the local weather remains the deciding factor for visibility.
Who can participate?
This tour is perfect for those who want to have time to enjoy the magic with no rush and have the possibility to set up camera equipment.
You only need a basic physical condition to be able to get in and out of the car yourself. We will have several stops where we can strecth the legs and take a look at the sky.
Program
Chasing the northern lights in the heart of the Arctic
A private car tour offers flexibility and a personalized pace, unlike large bus excursions. The journey is tailored to your interests, whether you are a photographer or a first-time visitor.
Our program has been set to chasing one of earth's most magical phenomena called the aurora borealis, on this unforgettable private northern lights hunt by car on Svalbard. As we leave the soft lights in Longyearbyen behind, the Arctic evening will open for us in the valley.
A journey into the Polar Night
Your local guide picks you up at your accomodation in a warm comfortable vehicle. It is still important that you have all your warm clothes with and on you as it might be very crisp and cold to stand outside gazing at the hopefully starry sky and taking photos.
WARM TIP: A very good idea is to have softshell touch screen gloves and then an extra pair of thick gloves to pull over.
When the sky comes alive
Then suddenly you might see a faint green glow begins to shimmer on the horizon, growing into sweeping ribbons of light dancing above the snowcovered Arctic landscape. Unpredictable and mesmerizing.
CAMERA TIP: Remember to add a long exposure time and if you wish to have a photo of yourself then you have to stand absolutely still for the seconds it takes to take the photo.
Flexible route guided by nature
Every evening is unique and it is not certain that it will be best to spot outside of town. Your guide will choose the best route to maximize your chances. But weather the aurora appears or hides behind clouds, the journey and the hunt itself is an experience unlike others.
PERSONAL TIP: This tour could also be a possibility for sharing special moments like a proposal, anniversary or birthday surprise, photography tour (not only for seeing the northern lights) , family activity.
Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to spot northern lights on Svalbard?
The best time to see northern lights on Svalbard is from November to February because we have darkness all day due to the polar night. This will get you a better chance as the sun stays below the horizon, creating perfect darkness for aurora watching - day and night. You can spot the green curtains in October as well as the beginning of March as well. This year the northern lights possibiities are even bigger than previous because of the increased solar activity.
1. Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, we highly recommend booking your expedition in advance. Early booking guarantees your spot and allows us to tailor the experience to your needs.
2. Can I join a if I’m traveling solo?
Yes, solo travelers are welcome! You will then pay for all 12 spots but we will then tailor your trip from your wishes.
3. How high are the chances for spotting the northern lights on Svalbard?
Due to the dark season on Svalbard you have the possibility to spot northern lights during nightime as well as daytime. The northern lights season is long but we do recommend you to have the tour in the beginning of your stay as you get information for how to hunt it.
4. Will other guests join the same tour as me?
No. You will only go on a trip with the persons you have booked the tour with otherwise the guide has your full attention and will show you around in Longyearbyen while hunting the northern lights as well as give you advice for how to best spot the northern lights.
5. Do we have guarantee for seeing the northern lights on the tour
No. Northern lights is a natural phenomenon which depends on solar activity and weather conditions. The tour is a hunt and therefor we will do our best to find it but there will be no guarantees. Just as if you went on a regular hunt. But you will never leave empty handed as the guide will share secrets for you to continue the hunt afterwards.
6. Why choose a private tour instead of a group tour?
A private tour offers flexibility, more comfort and a deeply personal experience.
Since we are not a big group then we don’t need to have a lot of waiting time for going in and out of the vehicle. We will travel at your own pace, without waiting for others.
The guide tailors the route to the best conditions that evening.
You can stop almost whenever you like for photos, stories or just hearing the silence under the stars.
This is ideal for couples, families, or anyone seeking the above.
Unlike bigger group tours, the private trip allows you to have the guide to yourself for understanding the Arctic. This often results in better photos, warmer conversations and memories that feel uniquely yours.
7. What happens if the weather is bad or the forecast is cloudy?
The tour runs in most weather conditions, as the aurora can appear in the valley even when the sky looks partly cloudy from town. This can also change very quickly on Svalbard and as you have time for the tour we need to patient as well. Your guide will use local knowledge and forecasts to find the most promising spots.
8. What should I wear?
Dress warmly in layers. We will have a heated car on the tour but is can still be very cold to stand outside to look a the northern lights. We recommend also to try finger touch gloves if you wish to take photos especially with a mobile (but they do not always work if it is too cold)
