The locals favorite summit: Platåfjellet

Join us for this 3,5 hour private guided hike to the locals favorite summit on Svalbard: Platåfjellet. Discover how the valley stretches out below you when you approach the cairn. Get the full panoramic view of Longyearbyen, Adventfjorden unfolds, and the mountains

Hiking tour to discover the breathtaking panoramic views

Hiking Platåfjellet will give you amazing panoramic views which are well worth the effort of climbing the summit. It is not a flat Sunday stroll. The trail is a steep uphill climb and during summer it’s on rocky ground but since this is a private tour you decide the tempo, you can take all the breaks you need to breathe, take photos, and set the pace.

This hike is the locals favorite mountain. It translates directly to “Plateau mountain” because when you reach the cairn on top it will be flat. Perfect for a break with a warm drink and enjoying the panoramic views of the northernmost town, fjord and mountains.

Great walk up Platåfjellet. Good views all around and interesting flora. Good to see the little auks on the cliffs at the top, and a snow bunting further down, as well as the barnacle geese. Really enjoyed the company of our Austrian guide Andreas. A fantastic introduction to Svalbard.

  • Warm inner layers (we strongly recommend wool)
  • Backpack:
A 25-40 liter backpack for your gear and personal belongings.

  • Beanie/thin neck-gaiter
  • Sunglases (not during winter)

  • Waterbottle

Rental for hiking boots with high ankle are available. You can add this as an extra in the booking process. We will need to know your size.

You do not need previous hiking experience. This is a moderate hike so it is an advantage to have an average physical fitness level.

You can use your own with a good ankle support or you can rent hiking boots from us so you will have the best equipment for hiking. The price is NOK 150,- per person for both a half day or full day tour. After the tour, the boots must be returned to the guide. We only have adult sizes (please bring boots for children). Just contact us when booking or add this in the booking process.

Nothing ruins a magical moment faster than being stuck with a group that have different hiking skills. On a standard group tour, you have to adapt to the pace of the slowest walker. If you want to pause for a photograph of the Svalbard reindeer and the group walks in front of the camera, take a break to enjoy the view etc. you can’t because the group has to keep moving.

When you book a private hiking tour, the experience belongs entirely to you (and your travel companions). Want to tackle the steep incline in a good tempo or more mindful pace with plenty of breathing room? You want to take a photo from a different perspective? This is it. You guide will focus 100% on your safety, your comfort, and your curiosity. It’s the difference betweeen being a passive tourist following a flag, and being a true adventurer writing your own story.

Rarely.

We will access the weather conditions on the departure day as weather forecasts on Svalbard can change from hour to hour.

If the guide decides to cancel the tour we will contact you as soon as we have made the decision and offer you a date change or full refund. We therefore recommend you to have some flexibility in your program and place the ski tour in the beginning of your stay.

Safety is our top priority and the guide will be bringing polar bear protection on the tour.

Dressing for Arctic hiking  requires a strict three-layer system combined with high-quality insulation for breaks. The key is regulating your temperature to prevent sweating during the ascent and freezing during the descent.

We recommend packing and wearing the following layers:

  • Base layer (For moisture)
100% merino wool underwear (top and buttom). Avoid cotton completely, as it retains moisture and cools you down.
  • Mid Layer (weather protection)
During winter a breatable fleece or wool jacket or a lightweight active-insulation jacket to trap heat while moving.
  • Outer Layer (summer weather protection)
During summer: Wind- and waterproof hard shell jacket and pants (e-g- goretex) with good ventilation zippers to shield you from the harsh Arctic wind.
  • Outer Layer (winter weather protection)
A thick down jacket or winter jacket with insulation.
  • Accessories
Two pairs of gloves (lightweight and heavy/windproof for downhills), a wool beanie (Balaclave),  goggles, sunglasses (March to September), and 100% wool socks.

By packing specialized layers, you can easily adapt to Svalbard’s rapidly changing weather and stay comfortable throughout the day.

The main hiking season on Svalbard is from mid May to September where we have longer days and no snow. It is amazing hiking during the winter season as well as we get the beautiful Arctic lights with pink and blue colors which creates the perfect background for pictures.

Yes. Add a unique twist to your hike with a barbeque at one of Svalbard’s beautiful outdoor spots. Enjoy a delicious meal cooked over an open fire, surrounded by the pristine nature of the Arctic. Whether it’s a rewarding end to one of our longer hikes or a standalone adventure, this BBQ experience adds a warm, cozy touch to your outdoor journey. Vegetarian option is available too.

Because this is an exclusive, 100% private tour tailored just for you, we have a flat base price which covers your private local guide and safety gear for anywhere from 1 to 4 persons.

Whether you are a solo traveler or a couple on a romantic getaway, or a family the total price for your group is exactly the same.

If you will be 5 persons or more then there is an addition cost per extra person. This will only apply per extra person from 5 persons or more.

You can do a private hiking trip if you are 1 or 4 persons, and in this case you will pay for at least 4 persons. The price will – as minimum – be for 4 persons which means that you will then have the guide to yourself for a half day or full day hike. You will explore in your pace without running after a big group. This is the best way to explore the Arctic wilderness. No rush and just your time to experience and enjoy.
