The Global Seed Vault and iconic places in Longyearbyen

The Global Seed Vault
& Iconic places in Longyearbyen

Visit the Global Seed Vault which is located deep in the permafrost in the mountain side. The Global Seed Vault is a backup for the world’s food supply, safeguarding against World events. We will also be visiting some of the iconic places in Longyearbyen.

Visit one of Svalbard's mountain secrets

The Global Seed Vault is one of the world’s most symbolic and mysterious places and it is placed outside of the town centre which means it is not allowed to go here without a guide with polar bear protection. You might be able to spot some reindeers in the area or even a polar fox if you are lucky.

You will walk on the gravel road from the parking lot to the entrance for the Global Seed Vault which is approx. 200 meters t/r.

During the wintertime (November to February) we will also keep an eye towards the skies as the northern lights might set the scenery for our visit.

We had an amazing time!
Tianbi – United States – July 2026
We had an amazing time! Our guides are incredibly thoughtful and knowledgeable. They made everything from the logistics to the sightseeing enjoyable and hassle free. We first went around the town a little and we were introduced to the town’s culture and history. Then we made our way to the seed vault. We were the only ones there so we had the place to ourselves. The guide also prepared hot chocolate, hot tea, coffee and some snacks so we can enjoy the place while staying cozy and warm. They were also extremely accommodating. We said we didn’t see any Arctic Fox yet so after the seed vault they drive us around to try to spot some and we did! Thank you so much for the amazing experience!

The tour was great! Our guide Maria told us a lot of information about the city, island, and Global Seed Vault. She's very nice, friendly, and talkative 🙂 we had a few stops across the city to see historic buildings, Bear Signs, or huskies! Totally recommend it 🙂
Great attentive guides

Our guide was very kind. I was interested in seeing a ptarmigan and she payed attention to this, later showed me one just next to the seed vault. In my opinion these gestures make a guide better than the others. She really gave us a lot of interesting information regarding any topic we were interested in. It was a perfect way to start my weekend here, in Svalbard. 😊
This tour is highly recommended

It was fantastic! Emily is a great guide. Apart from the Global Seed Vault, she also led us to visit some other places of interest within the town, e.g. The Church. The trip is relaxing and not intense at all. We were given plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the extraordinary scene. This tour is highly recommended.
Our experience was amazing. The views were insane

Our experience on this tour was amazing, the views were insane! Our tour guide Andreas was very kind, knowledgeable and approachable when asking the millions of questions we had. My friend and I booked our tour for the afternoon and I cannot recommend this more when looking for a relaxed afternoon activity while visiting.
